Disease Overview: | A parasitic infection caused by tropical insect bite carrying ova of filarial worms called Dipetalonema, producing microfilariae in the blood and body fluids dominant in Africa [more info] |
Signs and Symptoms: | Red, itchy skin (pruritis), abdominal and chest pain, muscular pain (myalgia), and areas of localized swelling (edema), hepatomegaly [more info] |
Diagnosis: | Stool test for ova, blood smear [more info] |
Treatment: | To remove eggs, antiparasitic drugs like Ivermectin or diethyl-carbamazine (DEC), surgery for removal of large parasites [more info] |
Clinical Management: | May need long term antiparasitic therapy and repeat imaging to ensure grown parasites are surgically removed [more info] |
