Disease Overview:Exposure to heat, cold, chemicals, or allergens such as plants cause erythematous allergic skin lesions and pruritis. [more info]
Signs and Symptoms:Itching, hives, wheals, and angioedema after exposure. Patients can develop bronchospasm, syncope, and shock. Autographism describes wheals produced by scratching or stroking the skin. Can also occur with persistent vibration of the skin and exposure to water.
Diagnosis:Thorough history and physical exam. Clinician can challenge the patient to confirm sensitivity by exposing them to the suspected cause.
Treatment:Oral antihistamines are effective and IV corticosteroids can be given for severe cases.
Clinical Management:Education and avoidance of the physical cause.
Referral:Allergists and immunologists work with primary care providers to educate and manage patients.Referral to Medical Genetics Department, if available. Initial virtual care is also available through organizations like TeleRare Health.
